Canto do Atins

Time passes at a different pace in the town of Atins, where the Preguiças River meets the Atlantic Ocean. Its soft sand streets lead towards a welcoming, peaceful people and one of the most beautiful landscapes in Maranhão.

The bucolic village facing a dark sand beach has also been recognized as a new point for kitesurfers, due to the wind conditions in the region. The best period for those who want to practice the sport is from August to December.

Leaving Barreirinhas, the journey to the village takes about an hour and a half, along a dirt and sand road, which can be covered in 4x4 vehicles.

SECRET SAUCE

Canto do Atins, about 7 km from the town, is one of the must-stops on the visit. At this point in the region, the beach takes on new contours and the dunes take over the landscape. It is also where the best-known restaurants in the area are located: Luzia and Antônio. The two serve the famous grilled shrimp with a secret in making the sauce. Don't forget to taste it!

A POND TO CALL YOUR OWN

It is not uncommon to find deserted lagoons near Atins and enjoy a bath completely at ease. The story tells that the Lagoa das Sete Mulheres, for example, was named after the natives after seeing seven naked women bathing in the place. The truth is that it is impossible to be in front of such crystal clear waters and not want to take a nice dip. The lagoon is about an hour's walk from Vila de Atins.

The tour to the village also includes the Capivara and Tropical lagoons. As they form during the rainy season, in the first few months of the year, the landscape can change from one season to the next - but it remains amazing anyway.

The path through the dunes to the lagoons can be done in 4x4 vehicles, on horseback or on foot.
