Baixa Grande

An oasis of restinga vegetation amidst the dunes of Lençóis Maranhenses National Park. This is how you can describe Baixa Grande and Ponta do Mangue, two locations that usually serve as shelter for travelers who cross the region on foot, the famous trekking.

The area is known as the Primitive Zone, and visitors are only allowed there that cause minimal impact to the environment. About 30 families live on the site and only they can travel in motorized vehicles - allowed for emergency situations, transporting people, food and materials.

Leaving Barreirinhas, it is necessary to take a speedboat along the Preguiças River to Atins and, from there, in a 4x4 vehicle to the access to Baixa Grande.678

LONG JOURNEYS

The walks through Baixa Grande take up to five days, passing by the beach and the dunes, with stops at the lagoons to refresh. Overnight stays in communities are a great opportunity to interact with local residents and learn more about the culture and habits of the region.

Heads up! It is mandatory to hire a visitor driver to make the crossing. After all, it is very easy to get lost in the dune field, most of the way there is no cell phone coverage and many places go days without a living soul.

DIVERSITY

The oases have the greatest diversity in vegetation and birds in the National Park and have lagoons perfect for bathing during most of the year, both inside and in the dune field.
