We are the largest municipality in the region with almost 65,000 residents. And also the gateway to Lençóis Maranhenses National Park.

Here, you will fall in love with Caburé, a small strip of sand of less than 300 meters of land between a lagoon and the sea. But you will also fall in love with Vaquejada, an event that takes place in July, in addition to our music festivals.

Our story begins with the Caetés and Tapuios Indians. First Jesuits, then planters occupied the region, this in the 18th century. We became a village (independent) only in 1871 and, a city, in 1938.

Petrobras discovered natural gas here in the 1960s, and especially from 1981 onwards, with the creation of the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, our region began to emerge for tourism.
