MERCADO PÚBLICO
DE FLORIANÓPOLIS
From the noise or the smell, you will have no doubts: you've arrived at our Public Market, which is literally in the heart of the city.
This was once the main trading point of the city. This has been since the turn of the 19th century (the building is from 1899). At the time, trade was carried out inside the boxes and also in the surroundings, by traders who came on foot and by wagon from all over the island.
Today you can understand a little bit of that heritage. As until the 1960s the sea beat behind the Market (before the big landfill), many products arrived by boat, which stopped where the fish trucks are now parked.
Precisely for this reason, the South Wing concentrates fishmongers, butchers, mainly. On the other side, you can find handicrafts and souvenirs from Floripa with all kinds of prices.
Here you will find everything from the traveler who wants to try a special cachaça or a cockle cake (a native delicacy) to the manezinho who is passing through drinking a cane juice or buying fresh seafood.
MANEZÊS
If you look up, you will see the retractable roof that unites the old with the modern. It was the last major intervention, in 2016. Before, the Public Market had some scares.
The first major renovation was in the 1980s. In 1998, a fire destroyed nearly half of the building. There were still two others, in 2005 and 2013, those also serious.
With time, stop to listen to the natives and get in touch with authentic Manezese, the island dialect that is spoken very fast. Or, as we say around here: dijêru (light).

THREE CULTURAL TIPS
Three cultural tips: in the North wing, look for Armazém da Renda to see our Intangible Heritage in action. Lacemakers work there and show the bobbin lace, brought by Azorean immigrants.
Second tip: in the middle of the North Wing there are giant old photos of the Public Market on display. They help you travel through time.
The other tip from a "manezinho": go up to the art gallery, with free admission. In addition to exhibitions, you will have a panoramic view of the Market and Largo da Alfândega which can also be your next stop.
Until the next stop, my dears!
