CATEDRAL NOSSA SENHORA DO DESTERRO
Smart Tour Brasil - Edição Floripa
How are you esteemed? All good, môquiridu?
Welcome to the Cathedral of Nossa Senhora do Desterro. Here, the white history of the city begins.
The name of the Cathedral already helps to tell a little of what happened. In 1673, a pioneer, Francisco Dias Velho, came from São Paulo at the behest of the Portuguese Crown to found the town, around 1673.
Here, where the Cathedral is, he built a small chapel - right in the highest part of the Center.

Dias Velho He brought his family, friends, about 500 enslaved indigenous people and luggage with an image of Nossa Senhora do Desterro, the second name of the city. The first was given by the indigenous people: Meiembipe: piece of land along the Channel.
Dias Velho was killed years later by English pirates. It was a confrontation that involved fear and revenge. Years before, Dias Velho would have imprisoned the pirates and taken a lot of gold and silver from these Englishmen. Do you believe yourself?!
The Cathedral began to be built in 1753 and took 20 years to complete. This, when the Azorean immigrants began to arrive on the Island.
Since then, it has undergone numerous renovations. The last big one was in 1922, when it won the stained glass windows and set of bells - which was once one of the largest in South America.
We invite you to look inside in silence and also discover the beautiful image of Nossa Senhora do Desterro carved in cedar on the left side of the Cathedral. It is a piece that is over 100 years old.
Take the opportunity to ask for a blessing and thank you for being in the old Desterro.
Until the next stop, mosquiridus!
