Princess Isabel's House
This remarkable architectural heritage is a true testament to the legacy of the Brazilian Imperial Family and the period when Princess Isabel and Count D'Eu lived here.
The house was built in 1853 by its first owner, the Baron of Pilar, and in 1874, it was rented to Count D'Eu, who acquired it in 1876 and built the second floor. During their time here, the first two children of Princess Isabel were born.
At this location, Dom Pedro II learned of the military movement that established the Republic. On the balcony of this house, one of the last photos of the family in Brazil was taken.

The Casa da Princesa Isabel is a beautiful example of 19th-century architecture, with neoclassical and romantic elements on its façade, reflecting the French influence of the time. During the Imperial family's stay, the location became an important center for cultural and political activities, hosting balls, soirées, and receptions.
The Princess also received her abolitionist friends and assisted them in planning the escapes of various slaves from their captivity. In the house's gardens, several camellia bushes, a symbol of the abolitionist movement, have been planted since the time when the Princess and her family lived there. After the Proclamation of the Republic in 1889, Princess Isabel and her family went into exile in France, and although the princess tried to reclaim her assets in Brazil, she never returned to her residence in Petrópolis.

The Casa da Princesa Isabel is open to the public for visits when there is an exhibition in operation. We invite you to embark on these historical and cultural journeys when the exhibitions are open, celebrating Petrópolis.
