Casa Stefan Zweig

You have arrived at the Stefan Zweig House! This was the final residence of the renowned Austrian writer Stefan Zweig and his second wife Lotte. Fleeing Nazi persecution during World War II, the couple found refuge in Brazil in 1941. Celebrated as one of the most famous and respected writers of his time, Zweig immortalized his love for Brazil in the book "Brazil, Land of the Future." His last work, "Chess Story," was written in Petrópolis shortly before the couple's suicide in February 1942, a tragic act of despair in the face of the atrocities of war.

Today, it is a museum and cultural center in his honor. Inaugurated in 2012, the Stefan Zweig House commemorates the life, work, and era of the writer. It also serves as a Memorial of Exile, recalling the lives and legacies of thousands of other exiles who came to Brazil.

In this unique space, you will have the opportunity to learn more about Stefan Zweig's life and work, his creative process, his ideas, and the circumstances that brought him to Brazil. The museum houses a permanent exhibition with manuscripts, photographs, and personal belongings of the writer, as well as temporary exhibitions related to literary and historical themes.
