Palácio de Cristal

You have arrived at the Crystal Palace, a remarkable architectural and historical landmark in Petrópolis. A rare example of 19th-century iron pavilion architecture, the Palace was built in 1879 in France at the request of the Horticultural Association of Petrópolis to host flower and fruit exhibitions held in Confluence Square. Inaugurated in 1884, with the presence of Princess Isabel and members of the Court, this impressive building is the first prefabricated structure erected in Brazil and is considered one of the country's most important constructions.

In April 1888, inside its walls, the princess emancipated the last slaves of the city before the Abolition was decreed in Brazil.

The Crystal Palace was designed and manufactured in France, inspired by the Crystal Palace in London. Sent to Brazil in disassembled parts, the Palace was erected in Petrópolis under the supervision of engineer Eduardo Bonjean.

Throughout its history, the Palace has been the venue for various events, such as flower, orchid, and bird exhibitions, concerts, fairs, and artistic performances. The location is also recognized for having hosted the last grand festivities organized by the Brazilian Imperial Family before the Proclamation of the Republic. Nowadays, the Crystal Palace is an important tourist and cultural attraction in Petrópolis and continues to host a variety of events and exhibitions throughout the year.

When visiting this iconic historical heritage, visitors will have the opportunity to admire its distinctive architecture and learn more about the rich history of the city and Brazil during the imperial period, making it an enriching visit.
