Praça da Liberdade (CIT)

The Praça da Liberdade (Freedom Square) is one of the most emblematic landmarks in Petrópolis, a place that preserves history and celebrates the struggle for freedom. Initially named Largo Dom Afonso, it received its first landscaping in 1886 by the hands of the botanist Auguste Glaziou. In 1888, it was renamed Praça da Liberdade in recognition of the rallies held on the site with the presence of renowned abolitionists such as José do Patrocínio and André Rebouças, and the meetings organized by former slaves to raise funds to buy the freedom of their companions still in the slave quarters.

Remodeled in 1914, the square was also named Praça Rui Barbosa, but later reverted to being called Praça da Liberdade. It still retains its beautiful bandstand, where cultural events are held.

It is located in the historical circuit of Petrópolis, between Av. Koeler with the São Pedro de Alcântara Cathedral in the background and Rua Barão do Amazonas with the Flower Clock and four museums open for visitation.

Currently, in this square, there is a Tourist Information Center - CIT, as well as being a recreational area in the Historic Center, with a fenced playground. Various events are also held here. It features a fountain in the center of the square, beautiful trees, and benches for resting and relaxing, serving as a meeting point to chat and appreciate the surrounding landscape.
